XML is a new kind of markup language. It is a platform independent
language that allows disparate application systems to communicate via the
Internet. XML addresses many of the inherent problems with HTML.
XML is used to store data and is also used to describe data rules (e.g.
field types, valid values). XML can be manually written or can be
generated from code generators and application systems. Many
spreadsheets, database management
systems and word processors can generate various types of XML documents.
All software coders should have at least a basic knowledge of XML as it
is strategically important for application integration.
