Software coders (application system developers) acquire their initial education in information
technology in high schools, technical institutes, community colleges and
universities. Many IT programs are also offered by leading educational
institutions via the Internet.
Although a formal IT education does helps people find high paying
contracts and permanent employment, many self-educated software coders are able to find good jobs
with minimal IT training. Entrepreneurial
high school students, for example, often build websites and e-commerce
applications on their home computers! They then market their computer
programming skills over the Internet, sometimes to employers that are located in higher income regions.
To survive in the IT industry, software coders must continuously learn
new computer languages, database management systems
and system development methodologies
to remain current with the ever evolving IT technologies.
